Toddler Program

Orlando Day Nursery's Toddler Curriculum is based on the principle that children learn best through direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events and ideas. During this active learning process, toddlers are encouraged to discover the world around them by exploring and playing. Learning and development are anchored by long-term, trusting relationships with caregivers, who are close at hand to support the children as they play. Adults scaffold further learning as they interact with children throughout the day. Teachers allow for the individual interests and needs of the child to be met as they help children thrive in a consistent routine that will flow into their preschool years.

Each day has the same basic elements:
- Teacher-led group activity times

- Center-based, child-directed free play
- Outside play time where children use large muscles to move, climb, run and more
- Meal times where the class eats together like a family
- Nap time when children rest on individual cots
- Personal care activities. Children are encouraged to brush teeth, wash hands, diapers are changed and those ready are helped to use the toilet

Based on child development theory and experience with toddlers, ODN has developed the following precepts to guide our work with very young children:
• Toddlers learn with their whole body and with all their senses.
• Toddlers learn because they want to.
• Toddlers communicate what they know even before they can talk.
• Toddlers learn within the context of trusting relationships.

Documentation of toddlers’ growth and development is through teacher observations, parent completion of the Ages & Stages screening forms, and a portfolio of activities that includes samples of art work and photos.
